Mesa
A smaller, isolated flat-topped formation with steep, often vertical sides — essentially an eroded remnant of a once-larger plateau, left standing after the surrounding softer rock eroded away. Diagnostic feature is isolation and scale: a mesa stands alone or in a small group, distinctly smaller and more sharply-edged than a plateau’s broad tableland.
